Nuclear Hotseat #117: Olympic Insanity + If Gundersen were in Charge at Fukushima

INTERVIEW:  Former nuclear industry insider Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Energy Education ( paints a clear picture of the current state of problems at Fukushima Daiichi… and then explains what he would do if he were in charge of the disaster site.  His first five minutes on the job would be awesome – and that’s a word I almost never use!

NUMNUTZ OF THE WEEK:  The International Olympic Committee for awarding the 2020 Olympics to Japan.  You had to ask?

  • Nuclear Spin-Speak attaining tornado-like vortex as Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe-Baby seeks to quash any Olympics opposition based on suspicions of the negative impact of Fukushima radionuclides on athletes and fans?

  • Japanese professor equates TEPCO w/the “Homer Simpson School of Nuclear Safety” <!>;
  • Fukushima crane starts to fall over (the equipment, not the bird or the oragami);
  • Fish of growing public concern to China, Korea, some Canadians and Guam?!? but not the US FDA, EPA, NOAA;
  • British embassy in Japan supports Fukushima by playing cricket in the evacuation zone.  There’s a reason why they lost the empire…

  2. YaY! you interviewed someone from independent WHO! Can’t wait to hear it.

    Have a good time off and renew yourself!

  4. If Japan Gov’t. truly wants the public to believe that they really want to cleanup Fukushima, then they need to add some non Japanese nuclear Experts that are not captives of the japanese nuclear industry to this TEAM; until that happens everyone will expect just more of the same Nuclear Baloney (NB)* and for good reason, since TEPCO and their Regulators tract record for telling the truth to date, has been a public relations failure in trust!

    I suggest that Arnie Gundersen, Gregory Jaczko, the Former Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission plus Former Japanese PM Kan be made part of that TEAM; then it would have at least some international credibility…

    Beware Japan

    I believe that TEPCO will now demand to restart Fukushima Diachi reactors #5 & #6 to power their ice wall refrigeration project and have the rest of the Planet pay for it!.

    TEPCO will use any excuse to restart more nuclear, which is only safe until their next accident…

    A far safer and less costly plan would be to pump all their radioactive water into a large tanker(s) and then pump it overboard (in a UN approved plan) that would spread it as “THIN” as possible throughout the entire Pacific and/or all the Worlds Oceans.

    While I do not like the idea of pollution any body of water, the Japanese are already doing it now in the worst possible way at Fukushima Diachi!

    The priority should be to relocate all spent fuel rods ASAP while at the same time getting rid of the stored Rad water as fast as possible, to make room for the water that will be needed for future cooling!

  5. Typhoon Man-yi has hit southern Japan amid fears the the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant may be impacted.

    Expect increased radiation (aka The Fuky Effect) because of additional rainfall and increased groundwater!
    Save #4 SFP …

  6. The health and safety of the athletes is being irrationally, negligently, and shamefully disregarded. Evidence shows why they will be unnecessarily over exposed to radiation from the Fukushima disaster. Holding this event in Tokyo is reckless and irresponsible.

  7. Fukushima is a disaster infecting the whole world. The Japanese people are crying out for SOMEONE to help them to save their children and there is no one.

    Why haven’t we demanded that the United Nations earn its keep? Fukushima is infecting the whole world The Japanese people who are stoical beyond belief are captives in their own country. Every country of conscience should be insisting that the United Nations take immediate action to oust Tepco et al. & get the best minds in the world working on a solution.Who pays? nobody..figure it out.

  8. Excellent show, Libbe. Thanks.

    I’d like to suggest we put Japanese corporations on the Hot Seat in 2014 with a global boycott of ALL Japanese corporations until Japan renounces nuclear power completely and starts telling the truth about Fukushima.

    I’ve been calling for it for years. We need to “crank up the volume” and get some cooperation from Japanese corporations. I’d like to discuss doing a show on the subject. Money is entirely political. When money fails, democracy follows. We’ve seen this in Japan. We need a new strategy for how to get Japan to open up and accept international assistance. We need to let the money spigot open from all over the world. An ounce of prevention …..
